FRESHEALTH Makes a Big Move Toward a Greener Future

We’re eliminating single use plastics from our FRESHEALTH school line!

Biodegradable packaging, DNO Produce/FRESHEALTH

This fall, FRESHEALTH is taking a major step forward in our commitment to both healthy kids and a healthy planet.

Beginning in Fall 2025, 94.3% of our single-serve school offerings will move from traditional plastic bags to a more sustainable biodegradable film that breaks down in landfill conditions within 10 years—compared to the 1,000 years it can take conventional plastics to decompose. The remaining 5.7% of servings, which previously came in plastic cups, will now be served in compostable cups designed especially for softer fruits.

This change will eliminate over 945,000 pounds of traditional plastic from our operations each year. That’s not just a number, it’s a meaningful reduction in waste and a tangible step toward reducing our environmental footprint.

"I think that it's important for companies to to step up and do things that are good for people and for the planet," DNO Produce President, Alex DiNovo, said. "If we have the opportunity to to do something better, we generally place an emphasis on it because we believe in it, and we believe that there's a responsibility that every company has to to to make a difference."

For us, the connection between sustainability and health is clear.

As DiNovo adds, "You can't talk about 'Making America Healthy Again' without produce being front-and-center within that from the diet standpoint. Fruits and vegetables are are kind of the original medicine if you will, it's part of the healthy diet."

At FRESHEALTH, we believe that healthy habits start early, and so does caring for the world we live in. Our new packaging is just one more way we’re making sure kids have access to fresh, nutritious produce—while protecting the planet they’ll inherit.
