Introducing High Rise Broccoli Stem Chips

An innovative new product designed to turn otherwise discarded broccoli stems into a crunchy, kid-approved snack that reduces waste and boosts school nutrition.

High Rise broccoli chips are a brand-new fresh-cut item, processed by our FRESHEALTH facility and made from High Rise Broccoli – a game-changing variety developed by Bayer Seminis Vegetable Science. These taller stems can be recycled into a new product to help reduce waste during harvest and open the door to fresh, creative applications. “High Rise broccoli is a breakthrough variety that gives farmers taller, more uniform stems—improving harvest efficiency while maximizing the use of the entire plant,” says Jenny Maloney, Director of Industry Relations for Bayer Vegetable Seeds.

These broccoli stem chips offer:

A kid-friendly crunch

✔ A minimally processed snack

✔ A naturally sweet & ready to eat product

✔ Sustainable sourcing & reduction of waste

Each year, thousands of pounds of broccoli stems are discarded due to their short length or tough texture. With High Rise broccoli stem chips, we’re limiting food waste by transforming an otherwise discarded part of the plant into a sweet, snackable, and sustainable product. It’s a smart solution for food waste in the harvesting process, and a delicious way for students to eat more vegetables!

This product has been:

✔ Piloted in multiple school districts

✔ Tested by chefs across Ohio

✔ Proven to have high student acceptance and versality in foodservice, according to early feedback

Whether it’s served as a cold snack, added to a veggie tray, or paired with low-fat dip, High Rise broccoli stem chips are a versatile addition to your lunch or Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program offerings. “There’s no better place to launch a new vegetable variety than in a school cafeteria! Kids are honest, adventurous eaters, and their feedback is second to none,” says Alex DiNovo, President of DNO Produce. Educators love the built-in opportunity to talk about food waste, plant parts, and sustainability.

And kids? They love the crunch.
