From Field to Classroom: Why Grower Partnerships Matter

With such busy schedules, it’s easy to overlook the careful planning, strong partnerships, and hard work that go into delivering fresh-cut produce to your lunch lines, restaurants, classrooms, and dining tables. But the truth is that, behind every produce requirement met, is a group of growers, food safety and traceability professionals, innovators, producers, and distributors that make it all possible. Our VP of Supply Chain, Nick Middleton, intimately understands just how important a role the growers play in the supply chain. After all, our country’s growers are ones who cultivate, harvest, and prepare the produce for its first round of distribution.

At DNO Produce, our top-notch growers are more than just vendors! They are our essential partners.

Foundation of Our Supply Chain

Our selected growers play a critical role in our supply chain, as they directly impact availability, quality, and consistency for our customers. That’s why, by partnering with a core group of trusted buyers, we’re able to plan our menus and our seasonal catalogues more effectively, communicate any changes to our distributor partners and foodservice customers as soon as possible, maintain strict product specifications, and respond quickly when market conditions shift… which might be more frequent than you imagine! In an industry dependent on factors as volatile as weather and crop conditions, having strong, communicative partners with boots on the ground is essential.

Because we work with a core group of growers, we’re able to plan, maintain our specs and react quickly when markets shift. This level of partnership with the growers gives us stability in an otherwise unstable industry.

Delivering Better Outcomes for Students

The students and communities we serve benefit just as much as our operation team by having strong grower partnerships. Reliable grower relationships allow us to maintain a steady supply of high-quality produce with fewer disruptions. That means students receive fresh, safe, and ready-to-serve products they can depend on, whether it’s in the cafeteria or through programs like the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP). As Nick puts it: “The relationships we have with our growers directly translates to better product to the students we serve.”

Navigating Challenges

The produce industry is no stranger to disruption, whether due to weather, crop conditions, or global supply shifts. Strong grower partnerships are what allow us to navigate those challenges successfully.

Earlier this year, for example, pineapple supply from Costa Rica was impacted by unexpected crop issues, something that can quickly ripple across the entire supply chain. As availability tightened, many in the industry were left scrambling to secure product, often having to make last-minute substitutions or adjust their offerings.

But because of the strong relationships we’ve built with our growers, our experience looked very different. Rather than reacting after the disruption had already taken hold, we were looped into the situation early. Our grower partners communicated what they were seeing in the fields and began working proactively to adjust loading schedules and sizing specifications to help meet our needs. That level of transparency gave our team the time and flexibility to plan accordingly, keeping production on track and minimizing any downstream impact. In turn, we were able to pass along timely updates to our distributor partners and customers, helping them stay informed and prepared instead of caught off guard.

Moments like these are where strong partnerships make all the difference. Instead of navigating uncertainty alone, we’re able to work collaboratively, stay ahead of challenges, and continue delivering the consistency our customers rely on without major gaps in supply.

Built-In Quality & Food Safety

Quality and food safety start long before produce reaches our facility. They begin in the field.

From the moment a crop is planted to the time it’s harvested, packed, and shipped, our growers play a critical role in ensuring the integrity of the product. That’s why we’re intentional about who we partner with. We work exclusively with growers who meet the high standards our team sets, including maintaining proper certifications, following rigorous food safety protocols, delivering consistent grading, and adhering closely to our product specifications. This alignment upstream makes a meaningful difference downstream.

Because our growers are committed to these standards from the start, our team isn’t spending valuable time correcting issues during production. Instead, we’re receiving product that already meets expectations—allowing us to focus on efficiency, consistency, and delivering a final product our customers can trust. It’s a proactive approach to quality that starts at the source and carries through every step of the process.

A Shared Commitment to Traceability

Traceability and food safety are ongoing, collaborative efforts that evolve alongside the industry.

Our grower partners are required to maintain comprehensive certifications, documentation, and traceability processes from the outset. This includes detailed lot tracking, clear origin transparency, and the ability to trace product quickly and accurately if needed. These systems are critical for compliance and for protecting the integrity of the food supply and ensuring rapid response when it matters most.

As Nick say, “The growers that we work with are required to have proper certifications, documentation, and traceability processed upfront. This would include lot tracking, origin transparency, and the ability to trace product quickly if needed. This is not a one-time conversation with the growers we partner with; it is an ongoing collaboration to make sure we have update to date information.”

The Value of Long-Term Partnerships

In an industry shaped by variables like weather, seasonality, and market volatility, long-term relationships provide something invaluable: stability. Therefore, by investing in lasting partnerships with our growers, we create a foundation built on trust, communication, and shared goals. When growers know they have a committed partner in DNO, they’re more likely to prioritize our programs, keep us informed of potential supply challenges, and work alongside us to navigate any disruptions that arise.

That level of collaboration transforms what could be reactive problem-solving into proactive planning. It also creates accountability on both sides. We’re not just working with growers; we’re working with partners who are equally invested in delivering high-quality product and supporting the customers who depend on it.

Ultimately, these relationships give us the confidence and consistency needed to fulfill our mission. Even in uncertain conditions, we can continue delivering fresh, safe, and reliable produce to the students and communities we’re proud to serve.
